Nintendos New Hand Held Console
by Mark Klocek
Nintendo have almost finished their new hand held currently code named
Game Wonder, here is the latest information currently available.
This hand held will use technology based on its current machine the N64
and will feature a full colour LCD backlit screen, which will be larger
than the Game Boy's screen which will be 240 pixels wide and 200 pixels
high (the screen size will be approx. 6cm wide by 5cm high). The Game
Magic will have an optional add on which will allow it to be connected to
TVs it will be priced around $35 in the USA.
A catridge system will certainly be used with each catridge being
expected to hold 16 Megabits (2 Megabytes). What is currently under
consideration though is the use of save game catridges currently being
employed on the N64 this will certainly be a purchasable add on, though
it may become a standard feature as catridges with battery back up cost
more to produce than standard catridges.
Apparently no analogue controller will be included but there will be four
fire buttons (set out much like the SNES four main buttons) as well as
the Start and Select buttons.
Game Magic systems will be easily linkable for multi-player gaming and
Nintendo is encouraging the development of multi-player games. Up to 8
Game Magic systems can be linked to each other.
The initial expected price in the USA will be around $160 (the N64's
intial price was $250) hopefully dropping to $60 in a year and a half.
Games will cost around $35 each.
A prototype of this machine is almost complete with styling expected to
be similar to the Game Boy.
One of the few issues to be resolved is the battery life, current
estimates show that 4 AA batteries will power the machine for 10 hours (4
AA batteries power the Game boy for 20-25 hours). Nintendo wish to raise
this to at least 13 hours preferably 15 hours by the time it is released.
However it has been estimated that a rechargable battery pack could power
the machine for about 27 hours.
The release date is expected to be early 1998 in Japan and April 1998 in
the USA with developer kits availble by March 1997. Nintendo will
certainly produce a Mario game which will be available by the time of
release which Shigeru Miyamoto, creater of Mario series including Mario
64, will over see.
